My grandpa spent forty years serving justice in the district court. Now retired, he runs a tiny “school” on our porch, where his only equipment is chalk, a kettle, and a patient mind. “The world runs on two kinds of laws,” he begins every lesson. “Nature's laws and people's laws. Learn both — and you will live in peace.”
Nature's class comes first. He draws a circle, a sharp angle, a long curve beside the curved back of the old bridge in his chart. Through thick glasses he shows us how an image forms in a telescope, how an atom is the alphabet of matter, how every element follows rules without a police force. “Acid burns, so handle it slowly — like anger,” he winks. “Remember,” he ends each lesson, tapping the chalkboard, “every cause has an effect. Choose your causes effectively, and your life becomes an effective answer — the moral kind.” Then he pours the tea, and the two kinds of laws sit quietly together on our porch, like old friends.
