歌詞と日本語訳

各パートは英語の歌詞と、その下の日本語訳で構成されています。英語の行をクリックすると発音が聞けます。

[Verse 1]
Old Mr. Nam lived all alone
A bad-tempered king on a creaky throne
Angry mornings, awful nights
He'd annoy the birds and dim the lights

[Pre]
The kids said he was boring, bad
The most annoying man we had
Annoyed by laughter, bored by spring
A bore who never sang a thing

[Chorus]
But love is patient, love is brave
It moves in closely, wave by wave
With care and courage, day by day
The walls of anger wear away
A calm heart hides in every storm
Comfort comes where hearts are warm

[Verse 2]
A little girl with cheerful eyes
Brought soup and stories — small surprise
She'd knock carefully at his door:
“Concerned about you, sir — nothing more”
At first he grumbled, awfully cold
But kindness slowly broke the mold

[Bridge]
One day he smiled — we stood amazed
The whole street watched him, hearts ablaze
“Amazing!” cried the baker's wife
He'd amuse the kids with tales of life
Amused, delighted, every night
His jokes — amusing — pure delight
He'd amaze us with his garden's beauty
Roses blooming beautifully
A beautiful new chapter starts
The old attraction of kind hearts
An attractive light — it will attract
We sit close by his garden gate
His anxiety has lost its weight
No more ashamed of needing friends
Depressed old days have met their ends
Confident now, he hums along
Confidently leads the evening song
His confidence — our village pride
Comfortable chairs set side by side
We sit comfortably, tea in hand
Cheerfully the night is planned
Concerning loneliness — one cure:
Show concern — and knock the door

[Outro]
Be careful with a lonely heart
It's glass pretending to be stone
So if you meet a grumpy soul —
Remember: kindness makes them whole

語彙ストーリー:The Grumpy King Of Lane Nine

English

At the end of Lane Nine lived Mr. Nam — alone for ten years. Neighbours called him bad-tempered: angry at roosters, annoyed by music, calling children's games awful and the weather always bad. “Don't annoy Mr. Nam,” parents warned. He seemed bored by spring itself — a boring, annoying old man, a bore who never laughed. Or so we thought.

Then little Su moved in next door — a cheerful girl of seven. Every evening she knocked carefully at his gate: “Grandpa Nam, I'm concerned that you eat alone.” At first he grumbled awfully, but she kept returning — with soup, with drawings, with simple care. Her courage was quiet; her kindness was brave. Watching him closely, she noticed the anxiety hiding behind the anger: he was not cruel — he was lonely, perhaps even depressed, and ashamed to admit he needed people.

Change came slowly, like a kettle warming. One morning he fixed Su's kite, and the whole lane stood amazed. “Amazing!” whispered the baker's wife. Soon he began to amuse the children with tales of his sailor days; everyone sat amused under the banyan tree, and his stories were so amusing that even the busiest mothers stopped to listen, delighted.

His garden came back to life. Roses bloomed beautifully; such beauty had been hiding behind a rusty gate all along — a beautiful secret. Each week he would amaze us with a new flower. Kindness, we learned, has its own attraction: an attractive warmth that will always attract people close. By summer, comfortable bamboo chairs appeared by his gate; we sat comfortably with tea while he cheerfully planned the evening's stories — calm, confident, humming confidently, his new confidence the quiet pride of the lane. Comfort, it turns out, is a door that opens from the inside.

“Concerning loneliness,” the old teacher likes to say now, “there is exactly one cure: show concern, and knock on the door. And be careful with a lonely heart — it is glass pretending to be stone.” Mr. Nam — our Mr. Grumpy — smiles every day now. And Lane Nine has never sounded so much like a song.
