Still, he refused to collapse, to confuse a hard year with a failed direction. "Deny the doubt," he told himself. "Control the morning."
He concentrated on one crop: smart beans — curly, curious climbing things that responded beautifully to his sensor system. The context was simple: the county faced a water shortage; his solution used sensors to deliver the correct amount, on the correct schedule, to the correct root depth. The conduct of the old farms was to flood or to dry; his system found the balance. The committee confirmed: water use fell by forty percent. A concrete win.
In concert with the elders, he adapted. He never let their craft become confined to his technology — instead, they combined. A county contest the second year brought visitors. "Competitive?" one judge asked. "Completely," said Tùng, without apology. The comparison with traditional yields was not complicated: thirty percent more, thirty percent less water. Don't complicate what the seed knows — give it what it needs, and let it do the rest.
Now four families in the county use versions of his system. Tùng still rises in the dark, corrects the pH before breakfast, and crushes any decay in the compost before it spreads. He is curious about every current problem and deaf to every old reason not to try. "Crazy enough?" the village headman asked at the harvest ceremony, grinning. Tùng raised his cup of tea: "Dare to be, uncle. That's the whole crop."
