He had wrapped the telescope in the same cloth since 1998. Written on the case in marker: "For wonder's right." The work he did was more than star charts. He believed — wisely, it turned out — that wonder is a skill, and that the worthwhile thing about a sky full of stars is not their distance but their invitation: every worldly problem shrinks under them.
His teaching was wonderfully simple. Every student kept a star log — one page per Thursday. The wording of the entry mattered: not "I saw Jupiter" but "Why is Jupiter bigger than Earth?" Well-worded questions led to long-lasting thinking. "No question is worthless," he repeated every week. "No child is unworthy of a sky full of stars."
